Gladioli

The large and diverse genus of gladiolus includes around 180 species. The wild forms are far removed from the many hundreds of modern hybrids, with their complex genetic make-up. The hardiest of forms can be found growing wild in south Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

Gladioli have a delicate charm and usually produce spikes of small flowers in early summer. Their striking wands come in a wide range of brilliant colours and can be successfully incorporated into many planting schemes. The most commonly grown varieties include Gladiolus communis, G. illyricus and G. italicus.
